The VW engine case is designed to allow air in past the crank pulley to vent the internal pressures. The problem comes when you run them in dusty dirty envinronments, like the sand dunes. A "sand seal" will prevent dust and dirt from entering tha case. However, you must make sure to allow air in somehow if you perform this modification. The most common solution is a breather box of some sort with ports installed ont he valve covers. Do not simply install a seal and not update the rest of the venting system.
Notes:
Even when using a patch like this, a line bore is occasionally required after performing this modification.
